This element ignites our imagination and zest for life—and reminds us that like the phoenix, we can emerge into new forms

Welcome to my garden. I’m Peggy Fiedler, and I’m a compassion advocate, cancer thriver and storyteller. Today I’d like to talk about the element of fire.

During my day, working from home, I keep a fire in the fireplace. Instead of the corporate office building, I am now working in an environment I’ve created – with artwork, light streaming through the French doors that open to the garden, still blanketed in snow. In the background is my fireplace with a roaring fire.

The fire is my creative companion and my comfort. It offers me warmth and sparks my sense that this is play, not work. The fire ignites my imagination and zest for life. Yet the fire is mesmerizing and relaxing. How intriguing that it’s both energizing and calming!

In many cultures, the element of fire figures into spiritual rituals. It symbolizes the divine fire that burns in every soul and points us to our passion, zeal and creativity. Fire forges our will and determination so that we may not just have flashes of insight but manifest our highest hopes, most worthy endeavors and most illuminating ideas.

Like the phoenix that rises from the ashes of the flames, we can find that our journey through the fire of adversity leads to a new emergence. The mythical bird regenerates into a new form. It is the ultimate symbol of strength and renewal.

Even during the hardest times, the element of fire reminds us we can transcend any trial and tribulation with imagination and will. This week, I invite you to step deeply into your story and become the hero of your own legend.
