I find beauty in this connection as every day, new varieties of wild birds come to be nourished in my garden
Welcome to my garden. I’m Peggy Fiedler, and I’m a compassion advocate, cancer thriver and storyteller. Today I’d like to talk about the bird feeder.
Recently, I put up a bird feeder in the garden. It was a gift from my sister, now that she has moved to her new apartment. For me, it’s a welcome addition alongside my wind chimes and granite fountain.
Now all new varieties of wild birds come daily to be nourished. They give me so much pleasure, helping me to slow down. There is a beauty in this connection with the natural world around me. I am providing food for the birds and delight in knowing they are cared for. In the morning, they care for me, too, as I sit down to my work desk with my breakfast and watch them eat theirs. Suddenly, I’m no longer eating alone. Their exuberant presence and cheerful birdsong delight me.
The feeder is attracting a new wildness around me. I am now their reliable and abundant source of food, keeping them well-nourished and helping them to thrive. I am helping them to understand that they too have a place to call home.
During my father’s declining years, it was an important part of his day to shovel a path through the winter snow so he could get to the bird feeder and fill it with seed. From the picture window, he could gaze as they came, watching their flight and listening to their songs.
I believe my father, my sister and I all valued this divine connection because it reminds us we are part of a whole ecosystem. We, and the birds, too, are components of what keeps this space thriving. As I watch the birds alight, I feel woven into the web of life.
I think it’s because we yearn to care for something. I enjoy providing for another’s sustenance, happiness, continual growth and well-being. When I watch, fascinated, with how the birds fly, I am in an interplay.
