Boxwood is often called the “little black dress” of the garden. It is the most popular ornamental evergreen and brings year-round color to the garden.
The boxwood is a timeless classic. I have a fascination with what allows objects—and ideas—to stand the test of time.
Hedges provide structure, which in turn gives a sense of order and architectural beauty with parameters and boundaries, things that help us distinguish a clear path.
Structure and order can give us a sense of stability. The hedge gives us boundaries that help us feel safe.
When I received a cancer diagnosis three weeks after losing my husband, I asked myself, “What structures can we count on when a threat like cancer comes into our lives?” When a threat rocks your world, it can leave you feeling vulnerable, uncertain and frightened. What I found most helpful was not bearing the experience all alone.
During the journey that I write about in Permission to Live, I reached out for support from my loved ones, who offered encouragement and accompaniment. The boxwood reminds us that we also can count on support from a higher universal force.
Surround yourself with images, objects and living things that comfort, soothe and relax you—those things that hold you and create a healing environment.
I love that my garden has both structure and free-flowing wildness that complement each other.
