These days I feel a quickening in my garden. There is a chill in the air. The leaves of the American dogwood have already shifted their colors. I know more trees will follow, appearing on the distant hills of my horizon in bands of red and gold.
The blossoms of the hydrangea are following suit. In the spring, they began as whitish pale-yellow, then morphed to a blue-pink and now are a deepening pink that some call frosted maroon. I note that this hydrangea’s name is Endless Summer. Coming into to its full maturity, it’s taking cues from
the orchestra of the glorious colors of the turning leaves above it.
When I pass through my garden each morning, I feel called to take my place in my own cycle of vibrancy and warmth.
Unlike the long reach of the sun’s rays and summer’s play, this short period of time delights us with a tableau that is abundant with visual bursts of color. This is nature’s final passionate goodbye to us. So we don’t forget.
This is a season when we are called to harvest our inner lives. Everywhere we look, we see boundless vibrancy so we can be comforted that after every ending, there always be a rebirth.
