Our first frost will arrive soon. I see this time as the practice of saying farewell to everything summer represents.

Join me this week as we say a sweet goodbye to the flowers in the healing garden.

Let us remember that frost is a two-act play. In May, the minute the frost lifts, I am filled with a surge of energy to plant new flowers, excited with the anticipation of creating the garden. I look forward to basking in it all summer long, when it is abundant with new delights.

Every day all summer, I pleasure in watching the garden gather itself into a crescendo, as more and more stunning flowers bloom. Like any relationship, I must tend to it to keep it vibrant and alive. Summer asks me to be in a more active interplay as I remove old blooms to make room for new. As I water thirsty plants in the evening, I am showing my devotion. The time, energy and love are my show of gratitude. Much has grown here from frost
to frost.

Frost reminds us that what we do have, we don’t have forever. Frost can be an abrupt reminder of that. There’s nothing gradual about this farewell. The current abundance and beauty are instantly gone.

The first frost reminds us that change is inevitable. As much as we want to hold onto the good things of summer, we must say farewell.

Before the frost comes, we can sit in the gratitude of what the garden has given to us. We can relish in its beauty and find a sense of peace within that we can carry into the next season. The garden teaches us how to say farewell with tenderness and appreciation.

THE FIRST FROST AFFIRMATION

I relish in the abundance and joy of what has been vibrant in my life this season. I carry within me a sense of peace that I am living in the interplay of the enchanted movements of life.
