With velvety soft petals and golden eyes, this flower represents the divine feminine and brings harmony between heaven and earth

Welcome to my garden. I’m Peggy Fiedler, and I’m a compassion advocate, cancer thriver and storyteller. Today I’d like to talk about the African violet.

This week I brought African violets to the man who turns my hair into gold. I brought them in remembrance of the one-year passing of his grandmother.

The arrangement I chose for him included deep magenta African violets with velvety soft petals and golden eyes. It’s like they’re looking up and smiling at you.

I realized that I had brought him an arrangement of African violets when his mother passed many years ago. When I remembered that, I started to wonder about the symbolism and significance of African violets—why was I drawn to them on occasions like this?

I was soon to learn that African violets have long been associated with mothers and motherhood. They are connected with Easter and Valentine’s Day, days when we want to honor a gentle but very deep love. They are symbols of loyalty, strength, courage and devotion.

The African violet, which is native to Tanzania, is a representation of the divine feminine. In the chakras of the Eastern traditions, the African violet is associated with the crown, the energy center of enlightenment, divinity, peace and liberation from limitation.

Native American legends tell us that the violet is a child born from both earth and sky. That child is one of harmony, essentially the mediator between heaven and earth. When I learned that, I remembered the old saying that violets will never bloom unless they see the sky. They are potent with the powerful spirit of opportunity and seem to hold something that is eternal.

Even though we may lose someone through death, the violet reminds us the loved one’s spirit is eternal. They are always watching over us. Our memories of them are still alive, allowing us to pass on the lessons they gave to us.

African violets offer a reassurance to those still living that though the departed are no longer with us in physical form, their eternal spirits emanate from us and enrich everything we touch, creating legacy.

THE AFRICAN VIOLET AFFIRMATION

I feel the embrace of the eternal mother. I allow that loving spirit to live in me and completely come through me.
