Sweet, restorative figs sustain more species than any other fruit. This week, let yourself flourish in its abundance and nourish others’ lives.

Welcome to my garden. I’m Peggy Fiedler, and I’m a compassion advocate, cancer thriver and storyteller. Today I’d like to talk about the fig tree.

Fig trees have an irresistible allure for me. I don’t know why, but about four years ago when I moved to the home in which I currently live, I just had to buy a fig tree for my garden. It’s one of the featured trees, nestled between the honeysuckle and hydrangea, so it greets people when they arrive.

One of my happiest memories is going to visit the 90-year-old Italian mother of my co-worker at lunchtime and feeling transported to a lush Mediterranean scene. Touring her garden, I was captivated by an enchanting fig tree that took me far away, beyond the urban setting.

The fig tree represents the feminine spirit—it is a symbol of abundance, fertility and sweetness. It reminds us that we are naturally co-creators. Fig trees are a symbol in many spiritual traditions, from Islam to Christianity to Jainism to Hinduism. The banyan tree, which is in the fig family, is the symbol of India because it represents eternal life. Sometimes it is called a wish-fulfilling tree.

Figs sustain more species of wildlife than any other kind of fruit. This is why ecologists call them keystone resources. If figs disappear from the landscape, the whole ecosystem comes crashing down.

Figs are sweet, tasty, packed with fiber, vitamins and minerals. They have tremendous nutritional benefits. They are very restorative.

This week, the fig tree reminds us to nourish ourselves and others. This plump, pear-shaped fruit tastes magnificent when ripe. Figs love the sun. They soak up the warmth.

This is my reminder that as the fig sustains the vast web of life, we can see ourselves, each in our humble places, and can hold in our awareness all the ways we nourish and sustain others.
