Magical and playful, moss dances in a perfect marriage with the majesty of stone.
It is here in the garden that we can gather the patience and self-knowledge that assure us all shall be well.
Welcome to my garden. I’m Peggy Fiedler, and I’m a compassion advocate, cancer thriver and storyteller. Today I’d like to talk about moss.
My garden holds one element that always provides me with a sense of timelessness. Any time I need to slow down, I gravitate to one moss-covered landscape boulder. This majestic gray stone is covered in a delicate carpet of moss, which makes it seem like I have lived here for a good long while.
It is here that I can access deeper wisdom and patience. Moss is the harmony that holds the aesthetic of the garden together. Though it does not get a starring role, it is a precious natural wonder. It feels cool, green and luscious to my fingers. It’s like a carpet of velvet.
Moss works with all the other components such as flowers, trees and stone, to create a full aesthetic, holding each in their state of natural beauty. I think it adds a romantic element, too.
Its floral meaning is charity and maternal love, but the love doesn’t stop there.
I find something magical about the color moss green, the way it plays with other colors, whether that’s in a garden or in fashion. It’s a classic, leading us to a sense of awe and nostalgia.
Moss dances well with stone. Soft, natural and alluring, it often attaches itself to magnificent stones that hold colossal strength. It’s the perfect marriage of timeless stability, a reminder that to gain deeper knowledge, we must gather experience, persistence and patient self-control. Sometimes, we simply need to be still and let life unfold to become what it will be.
In this way, we have now arrived at the final refinement to the healing garden. Moss is humble in its simplicity and awe-inspiring in its complex interplay. In the Shinto spiritual tradition, the Japanese believe that faith resides in nature itself. This is believed to be the reason that the Japanese built gardens, not cathedrals.
THE MOSS AFFIRMATION
I dwell in the harmony of timeless simplicity. I delight in the interplay of majesty and deeper knowledge. All is unfolding with love, and that is as it shall be and always shall be. I walk in peace.
