Bringing in peace, longevity and prosperity
Welcome to my garden. I’m Peggy Fiedler, and I’m a compassion advocate, cancer thriver and storyteller. Today I’d like to talk about swags of cedar.
This week continues the bringing in of the green. To welcome in the season, I am draping chandeliers and banisters with freshly cut swags of cedar embellished with pine cones and crimson velvet ribbons.
As my home fills with the scent of cedar, I am reminded of the weeping cedar in my courtyard, which greets all those I welcome here.
My dear young friend Hilary, who is part Lebanese, admired the greens and reminded me that cedar is the central emblem on that country’s flag. The white band denotes peace, depicts the snow on the mountains and represents purity. The green cedar in the center is an emblem of longevity, symbolizing steadiness, happiness and prosperity. It represents strength.
Cedar medicine figures prominently in many Native American traditions, symbolizing generosity and providence. It is used in prayer and healing rituals. The Salish traditions of the Pacific Northwest Coast have many special rituals for the felling of cedar trees. These rituals recognize that the cedar has its own life and spirit.
Cedar protects us. It relaxes the body and mind, it is commonly used in spiritual ceremonies, such as communal prayer and meditation.
These swags of cedar adorning every corner of my home are bringing me hope, connection, strength and support. They elevate my soul.
The cedar’s deep-reaching roots are said to be the source of its grandeur. When I bring in the aromatic green, I am inviting in the spirit of holiness, eternity and peace.
