To cultivate the spirit of the playful and the enchanted,
practice random acts of festivity
Welcome to my garden. I’m Peggy Fiedler, and I’m a compassion advocate, cancer thriver and storyteller. Today I’d like to talk about keeping it festive.
Where I live, January can feel like a long cold dark month, the calendar empty of celebrations. It’s important for me to keep the jubilant spirit alive, so I practice random acts of festivity.
In my book, Permission to Live, I write that you don’t have to have a cancer diagnosis to be walking around half-dead. Festivity connects us to joy, possibility and wonder. A festive spirit helps us fully embrace the magical spaces that are around us every day.
It’s the little touches that make life festive—a hand-written note, a fresh bouquet of flowers, a homemade meal. Every little detail is done with love and wonder.
We can create our days to be anything we want them to be. We can design rituals and celebrations that bring forth our own unique ambiance. It is that special something that we feel when we cross a threshold and meet life with delight. It may be visual excitement, such as decorations. It may be sensory pleasure, through the aroma from the oven or the scent of the season.
With random acts of festivity, we can cultivate a spirit of the playful and the enchanted, through attention to details that awaken our imagination, our generous spirit, our joy.
The festive spirit is a way of honoring those we love. Take time during these long cold days to look for ways you can be festive. Years later, these moments will be treasures of the heart.
