In the Victorian era, people spoke of their love through the language of flowers. This year, let yourself be loved for who you are. And let us be devoted to one another.
Welcome to my garden. I’m Peggy Fiedler, and I’m a compassion advocate, cancer thriver and storyteller. Today I’d like to talk about St. Valentine’s Day.
Love is in the air in my garden, even though it still seems like winter. The birds are singing as they pair up. It’s almost St. Valentine’s Day.
Every year on the 14th of February, people celebrate by sending messages of love and affection. In the Victorian period, symbols such as hearts, cupids, lace and flowers started appearing on romantic hand-written letters filled with verse.
If you received a card filled with love poems, you would very likely display your cards in the parlor. Men were known to compete to give the most ornate card to their love. So, let’s get little Victorian.
In the Victorian era, people spoke through the coded language of flowers. Nearly every sentiment a human would want to express could be said with flowers. If someone sent you a bouquet of lilacs, he was telling you he felt stirrings of love for you. The intention would be clear: He wants to court you. These were bouquets that talked!
Lilacs tell the message of what love is, a mingling of two hearts. In their natural color, they carry the story of the exchange of qualities. Blue as masculine expression, red as feminine expression combine to make a striking shade of purple. Lilacs are the first harbinger of spring, when nature comes alive into a dance of giving and receiving.
This is a time when the messages around us are announcing their intentions. Let yourself be adored. Soak it in. Someone admires you. Let yourself be loved for who you are.
Valentine’s Day is a yearly marker reminding us to be devoted to each other. Let it not end there. We can be ardent and steadfast to those we love each day throughout the year.
