With spring on its way, we can look forward to good fortune and a flourishing heart.

Welcome to my garden. I’m Peggy Fiedler, and I’m a compassion advocate, cancer thriver and storyteller. Today I’d like to talk about the shamrock.

The colors aren’t here yet, but they’re about to be. If I look carefully in my garden, I can seethe smallest of leaves poking through the soil underneath last year’s growth, like wee little gems. Only the tiniest tip of the bud can be seen on the brown bark of the tree limbs.

It has been a long journey through winter, and we may be tempted to ask, “Are we there yet?” This week, we enter into a season of anticipation, with daylight saving time beginning in the United States on Sunday, St. Patrick’s Day being celebrated on Wednesday and then Spring Equinox on Saturday.

When you find your first shamrock, it’s your first signal you’re inviting the first tender green leaves of spring. The three leaves of the shamrock stand for the virtues of faith, hope and love. In Ireland, the shamrock became a teaching tool that helped us understand how unseen things transform us. Nature, in its beauty and brilliance, often offers us profound insights into how we must live connected to ourselves, others and spirit.

This is a time when we can delight in the anticipation of the abundance ahead. What we can look forward to as spring arrives is luck and good fortune. The playwright Tennessee Williams once said, “Luck is believing you’re lucky.”

Green brings its own kind of luck, symbolizing tranquility and vitality. It’s the color of the heart chakra, the energy that is about love to others, warmth, sharing, sincerity, devotion, forgiveness and transformation.

The shamrock heralds us to cultivate these virtues. It reminds us that something more is flourishing. What changes things is love. When we love abundantly, we change our luck. And we change the world.
