Their songs are bright and assertive, calling us to power and confidence

Welcome to my garden. I’m Peggy Fiedler, and I’m a compassion advocate, cancer thriver and storyteller. Today I’d like to talk about the northern cardinal.

It’s mating season. The northern cardinals have been with us all through the winter, but now they are making their presence known through their laser-like calls.

Through the winter, we saw them stand out against the snow, but now against the emerging green, they are really striking. They travel together, swooping into my courtyard in pairs, the male with its bright red plumage and crest, the female with her soft red tones and muted brown feathers. Cardinals are a symbol of happiness, love and partnership.

It’s the male who is on display, making his calls and even offering dinner. Who could say no to that?

In Native American culture, cardinals represent devotion, loving relationships, courtship and monogamy, more than any other symbol in Native American lore. They are associated with a ray of hope, in spring after a cold, harsh winter.

The female cardinal, in particular, is seen in many cultures as signaling good news. Bright days are ahead. She beckons to us that something positive is on its way. She promises that we can turn our dreams into reality.

Some believe the cardinal is a spiritual messenger, sent by loved ones in heaven to let you know they always feel your love and they are nearby.

As my courtyard fills up with their song, I think, “Now they’re really speaking up!” They nudge us to believe it is time for us to speak out.

Their sharp chirping is bright and assertive. When you listen to them, remember the power you possess. You have the determination and the ability, no matter what obstacles may be in your path, to accomplish anything you desire. This week, speak out, stand in your power and continue to be open to love.

THE NORTHERN CARDINAL AFFIRMATION

I say yes to that. I stand in confidence. I speak my truth. I believe in the power of love.
