This spectacular hot pink bloom is the master of endurability, a love that is constant, pure-hearted, strong and kind

Welcome to my garden. I’m Peggy Fiedler, and I’m a compassion advocate, cancer thriver and storyteller. Today I’d like to talk about the flowering pink dogwood.

The dogwood is in full bloom in my courtyard, awash in hot pink flowers that seem perfectly sculpted into four-pointed crosses. This spectacular expansion of pink is the beginning of the beginning. The garden is abuzz with bees and butterflies seeking nectar and bringing forth life.

Even though its flowers are small and delicate, it can survive harsh conditions. The dogwood flower is a symbol of endurability because it can resist nature’s fluctuations. It represents kindness, stability and determination, bestowing us with strength and protection.

In Native American tradition, these flowers represent the four corners of creation—four winds, four holy cities, four sacred mountains. It wasn’t a surprise to me to learn of its all-encompassing healing properties.

The Cherokees told legends about a race called the dogwood people, who would teach about harmony with the earth and protect children and elders. They practiced good deeds, not for their own gain but for pure-hearted benevolence.

The pink blossoms of the dogwood express affection, that you care deeply and devotedly. It’s as if this flower is saying, “Solid is the new sexy.”

We live in a culture that seems attracted to drama, where the outlandish ones vie for all our attention. This week, let’s take a look around and notice the people in our lives who are impeccable with their word—they do what they say they will do. They show their love through their deeds. We can rely on them. Their love is constant. When we are with solid people, we feel safe. We feel grounded.

THE FLOWERING PINK DOGWOOD AFFIRMATION

I live in harmony with the earth. I protect those who are most vulnerable. I honor those who are solid, enduring, reliable and constant.
